cyborgs

Alright so I wanted to talk about this idea of cyborgs a little bit. They confuse me and the lecture we had today confused me a little too. It's just a matter of the whole what separates us from them that I find to be a thin line. Like that movie that I had mentioned. If it's a cyborg of themselves, and you die if it dies then what's the difference? What is the point at all of having something else live your life for you? That's what I don't understand. However I don't think to say that if you have a false heart or a prostetic limb that that makes you a cyborg. I saw an episode of PopularScience something or other (I forget what exactly it was, I saw it a while ago) where it was talking about how we already have androids made and they're made to be connected to another person...so say that my boyfriend and I are separated for a bit, one of us is studying abroad, so this android thing is connected to the other person I believe emotionally and then I would have one and it's programmed to do things like hug and such. It was really neat but kind of odd at the same time. But that begs the question then as to what separates the person it's connected to into two completely separate beings if it's going as far as connecting to an actual person. I don't know, I kind of like the idea, it just doesn't sit quite well in my brain.

  2. I personally think that the idea of cyborgs is a little creepy. How you used you and your boyfriend being far apart and then having a robot hug them for you? I think that's what you said but that's so weird!!! I don't want any other girl on my guy, robot or not hahaha, I'm kidding. Although, I do think that it is weird.
Furthermore, I do not understand the point of having something else live for you?? You won't be able to feel, smell or maybe you can hear? I don't really know. Do you know where this idea came from?
I wonder if there is a book based off of this idea, I would love to read it.
Do you think that we as a society will ever be that bad? That we rely on technology to do everything for us? I really hope not.
I remember I did a presentation on cryogenic freezing and long story short, they are working on freezing peoples heads and then bring it back way far from now. SO WEIRD!!!!! How will we produce with robots??
I wrote in my blog how we will NEVER be that bad to rely on technology. We will always have basic survival skills. I know some of you like to say that if you were thrown out into the wild, there will be no way you would survive. I don't believe that. I think intelligence and basic instincts will have us survive. Or do you think that we won't?
I think that in the book she can easily go on without technology. She was perfectly fine before and I believe that she is very smart. What do you think?
One last thing I was confused about in class was how we are not the smartest on the planet? I don't remember if that was you or someone else. What is smarter than us or what seperates us from other animals?

  3. I don't think it will ever come to an android living your life for you. Not even close to it. If we want to be literal about it, then yes a person with a prosthetic limb is a cyborg. A person with a glass eye is too.

I don't think we will ever rely on technology that much-not like the movie you mentioned. Which is indeed a very creepy idea btw.

But, in our world we already rely so much on technology, I don't know many of us would survive without it. Genetically altered crops, electricity, phones- all of that sort of thing has made human kind very dependent don't you think? I garden and I could probably make a windmill to charge a battery (batteries) and thus still have electricity-but how many people outside of third world developing countries have this knowledge in their heads?

As for not being the smartest species on the planet, we just don't know enough about some species (such as dolphins and whales) to say we are the smartest. We can't translate their language. Someday maybe we will be able to, but until then we can state with a certainty we are the smartest.
